The Post-Impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) is legendary for his heavy impasto application of paint, brilliant colors, and vibrant swirling brush strokes. His every canvas expresses his opinion about Impressionism; the style did not provide the artist with enough freedom to express his emotions.
Van Gogh has become a legend. He was a schoolmaster in England, a missionary to the miners in Belgium, and finally, in 1880, an artist. After his contact with other painters in Paris, his style changed radically to the brilliant color and thick, swirling brushwork of his Arles period. A violent quarrel with Paul Gauguin precipitated his first attack of madness in which he cut of part of his ear. Of the hundreds of paintings he created, he was only able to sell one during his lifetime.

Van Gogh Cafe Terrasse Silk Tie
Van Gogh Cafe Terrasse Silk Tie is reproduced from a well known painting by Vincent Van Gogh painted during his time spent painting with Post-Impressionist, Paul Gauguin. When Gauguin arrived in Arles, Van Gogh insisted they paint outside as often as weather allowed. Cafe Terrace at Night is an example of what van Gogh referred to as 'painting in the natural state'. The thick and sketchy brush strokes evoke a raw, unrefined interpretation of the cafe setting. This method of painting along with his vibrant selection of colors in red, orange, yellow and green captures a particular mood about the setting and has become Van Gogh's legacy and trademark. Necktie is made from 100% silk, fully lined, approx. 58"L x 3 7/8"W. 6142 $29.95
