The Significance of the Totem
Tshimshian, Tlinglit and Haida- The symbol and figures found on the totem are read from bottom to the top. They are comparable to family crests and illustrate myths of family and traditions. Totems depicted animals of the country, legends and events that transpired. Frequently seen on totems are ravens, grizzly bears, whales, wolves, the thunderbird, mosquitoes, and frogs. Totem poles were carved during the life of the owner as well as monuments to the dead.
