These two marble sculptures are allegorical representations of Night and Day created by Michelangelo for the Tomb of Giuliano de' Medici--one of the most powerful banking families in Florence during the Renaissance. Due to their placement in front of the tomb, these figures allude to the eternal cycle of the calendar and thus, the eternal power of the Medici Family.
