Gustav Klimt (1862-1918)
Klimt was an Austrian painter and founder of the Vienna Secession--a 20th-century art movement which rebelled against the established norms of the Academy system in favor of a highly decorative style similar to Art Nouveau.
Klimt's contribution to the art world is a series of highly sensual and decorative portraits which have become synonymous with female beauty and romantic love. His painting of "The Kiss"--perhaps the most famous--has a timeless quality of the passionate and monumental expression of human love. Notice the rich surface beauty of the flat forms and decorative patterning.
We are pleased to offer this collection of Klimt's work as but an introduction to his diverse talent. In particular, where available, we have illustrated Klimt's preparatory sketches side by side with his finished art works (i.e. The Kiss, The Embrace) in order to reveal his artistic process.

Adele Bloch-Bauer By Klimt
Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer One of the best known and most monumental portraits is that of the wife of captain of industry Ferdinand Bloch. It marks the brilliant peak of Klimt's golden period, and also signified its end.Klimt began making preliminary studies for the painting in 1903. It wasn't until 1907 that he painted it in his characteristic, decorative style, which he carried through to the extreme here. Gustav Klimt (1862-1919) Klimt was a prominent member of an innovating group of artist called 'Sezession's and is considered to be one of the main pioneers of modern art. Apart from this, his ornamental Jugendstil style evokes an irresistible feeling which is inspired by the 'fin-di-siecle' of 19th century Vienna; elistist, liberal-middle class, decadent, pleasantly-decorative. His work is extremely recognizable due to his monumental style combined decorative. In Sezession's own words: "Art guides us to an ideal realm, the only place where we will be able to find pure joy, pure happiness and pure love. A choir of angels from paradise. Joy given by divine sparkles. That kiss from the entire world!”
