In architecture, a gargoyle is a carved stone grotesque with a spout designed to convey water from a roof and away from the side of a building. But to art lovers, a gargoyle is a mythical winged dog beast who snarls from roof tops to scare away evil. Gargoyles have many personalities. Some are menacing, some are pensive, and some are goofy. Gargoyles were frequently carved to appear on the outside of Gothic churches during the middle ages.
