| Until the end of his life in 1985, Chagall was one of the world's greatest living artists. From his youth in pre-revolutionary Russia to his death at age 97, his artistic output was unceasing. He developed a very personal imagery of flying lovers, rabbis, curious hybrid animals, and scenes of Paris in his paintings and windows. Today, continuing interest in his work attests to his place of prominence among the most sought after contemporary artists.
Chagall was born to a poor Jewish family. The imagery of the Old Testament and the symbolism of Jewish worship recur frequently in his art. This aspect of his work brought him many ecclesiastical commissions, both Jewish and Christian.
