Gianlorenzo Bernini was one of the most prolific and enduring artists of the Baroque era. His works capture the transience of the moment through an energetic portrayal of the characters as they twist and writhe in their narratives.

This stunning depiction of St. Sebastian from the St. Sebastian Catacomb on the outskirts of Rome is a testament to the long and prestigious career of Gianlorenzo Bernini whose work echoes with the essence of human passion. This later work was executed under Bernini’s supervision by one of his assistants, Antonio Giorgetti. Made from bonded carrara marble, imported from Italy, 4.5”H x 10.5”W x 3.5”L. 4526, $89

From the Cornaro Chapel in the Church of Santa Maria dell Vittoria, 1642-52. In this portion of the complete work for the funerary chapel of Cardinal Federigo Cornaro, an angel is in the act of plunging a golden arrow into St Teresa from which she understands her ecstatic love for God. Bernini’s sculptural group is part of a larger ensemble including an illusionistic ceiling painting, a marble altar, architectural panels, portraits of the Cornaro family, and golden rays. Made from bonded marble, black marble base, imported from Italy, 16”H x 13”W x 5.25”L.

This sculpture illustrates the Greek God of the Underworld, Pluto, in pursuit of his love Persephone whom he abducted while she was gathering flowers on the plain of Enna in Sicily. In a typical Baroque composition which emphasizes dynamism, Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) depicts Pluto’s pursuit in a spiraling flight of energy and struggle.
